Set on a Tuscan hillside, with a 360-degree view, Maraviglia is a 16th century olive farm that exudes peaceful, healing energy. Named by ancient pilgrims who exclaimed: ‘Che Maraviglia!’ (‘What a marvellous place!’), this venue in central Italy offers rustic, farmhouse accommodation, along with a yoga shala in the woods, an infinity pool, and hammocks with jaw-dropping views. Owner Francesco Piattelli has an extremely attentive team on hand to ensure retreats run like clockwork.

  • Two living rooms – one upstairs and one downstairs at the farmhouse – are the main indoor retreat spaces.

  • You have three hectares of olive groves at your disposal. In the woods you’ll find the fully equipped yoga shala, overlooked by ancient oaks. As well as a yoga space this can be used for reading, writing and meditation. Alongside the infinity pool, there’s a pool lounge area with a breathtaking countryside view. For solitude, hammocks are dotted around the grounds.

  • Accommodation includes rustic double and twin rooms with a muted décor, beamed ceilings and countryside views. In the main villa Prima Rosa and Prima Blu are large double en-suite upstairs rooms, while Piccola is a single downstairs room. Studio Room is a twin-bed, en-suite downstairs room. Next to the main house is Casina, a spacious triple apartment. As well as a super comfy boho bell tent with electricity and a stunning outdoor bathroom, there is a single glamping caravan with a shared outdoor bathroom.

  • Inside, the comfortable living rooms are decorated in warm, natural colours and have cottage-style furnishings – they’re lovely places to relax. You may want to curl up with a book in the library and the reading nook upstairs. Outside you can chill in shady lounge areas under charming oak trees, where you’ll find plenty of secret hammocks with panoramic views. The organic vegetable garden exudes lavender, jasmine and rosemary scents.

  • Francesco’s partner, Francesca Gambato, is the resident yoga teacher, offering daily rebalancing hatha yoga flow and restorative yoga. Classes are adapted to all levels. Treatments include shiatsu, deep tissue and ayurveda massage with experienced therapists. Explore a local medieval castle or walk to the charming town of Monte San Savino, or hike to a mountain village and have lunch with freshly harvested ingredients. You could include an excursion to hidden natural hot springs, visit local, small producers and an organic olive farm, or share lunch at a winemaker’s home.

  • You’ll enjoy mostly vegetarian food, with vegan options, offering balanced, nourishing menus on shared tables. Host and chef Francesca, who has a master’s degree in Food Culture and Communication, offers tailored menus, fusing Tuscan traditions with international twists. Maraviglia offers mostly farm-to-table produce, including its own extra virgin olive oil made from their own olive trees. Dietary intolerances can be catered for.

  • The farm grows its own vegetables and makes its own olive oil and fermented foods, using sustainable and regenerative agricultural methods. Only local and seasonal food is served, and guests are urged to be mindful about waste. Recycling is taken very seriously. Bedrooms don’t have air conditioning and fridges – instead guests are urged to close shutters during the day and allow for evening air circulation.

The Extraordinary

Owner Francesco spent his childhood at Maraviglia, but after starting a business in New York City, he craved an escape from the frenetic city lifestyle. This led him back to his hometown, which he now wants to share with others looking for deep connection and personal growth. His partner Francesca is a food anthropologist which becomes clear after just one bite of her delicious food.

The less than ordinary

There isn’t a huge choice of indoor communal areas or an indoor yoga space which could be an issue during the winter months. Although weather resistant and shielded with tents and sliding doors, the yoga shala is exposed to weather conditions. Any more than 12 people and the space feels overcrowded.
