Located in the heart of the Peloponnese on the Greek mainland, Euphoria Retreat is a collection of stylish buildings developed around a historic mansion, dating back to 1830, and it offers superb indoor and outdoor facilities for yoga, fitness, holistic, spa, health, dance and nature retreats. Nestled in the foothills of Mount Taygetus, this venue in Greece has been hosting holistic retreats since 2018. It offers 45 comfortable bedrooms and suites, as well as a refurbished 1830s Leoncini Mansion, all inspired by the Byzantine era. Its pièces de resistance are a feminine spa, spread over four floors, and a private pine forest for hiking, biking and outdoor classes. Nearby are the ancient towns of Mystras and Sparta, just waiting to be explored.

The spa is the base for water and heat-based therapies and has a Tepidarium, a Finnish Sauna, a Watsu pool, a Speleotherapy salt room and a Byzantine Hammam, as well as a central 'waterwell', sphere pool and infinity pool. There are two quiet halls for yoga and meditation, a Pilates and exercise studio and a fitness room with cutting-edge cardio machines. The GAIA restaurant has an open kitchen for cookery lessons - chefs and nutritionists share their nutritional philosophy.
-
As well as an outdoor yoga deck, facilities for aerial yoga and the infinity pool, there's a fully equipped forest gym - expect to bound up and down the steps of a classical amphitheatre. The garden at the front has areas dedicated to the five elements and their different energies, while the private forest offers terrain for hiking, biking, trekking and outdoor classes.

The 45 en-suite rooms all have their own character and their decor - lunar blues, sunshine yellows, rustic reds and golden hues - reflects the region's heritage. Modern touches include blond-wood floors, warm lighting and bespoke handmade mattresses. The refurbished 1830s Leoncini Mansion, with its own dining room, is for those who want absolute privacy. Elsewhere, the Classic Rooms are decorated in soothing colours and have designer furniture and luxurious bedding, while the Superior Deluxe Rooms have their own seating area, a marble bathroom and a veranda overlooking the citrus groves and the village of Mystras. The elegant Deluxe guestrooms have their own living areas, and the spacious Mystras Suites offer a super kingsize bed, a living room and an onyx marble bathroom. In the Byzantium Grand Suite there are two bedrooms, two marble bathrooms and a living room.

There’s a substantial reception area with beautiful sofas and tables, and the Gaia Restaurant is a good place to chill and chat. Curl up with a book in the soothing yoga and meditation rooms with wooden floors and designer mats and cushions, or enjoy the central relaxation room, which opens out onto an outdoor terrace. There's a relaxation area by the pool, overlooking the forest.

Enjoy a treatment from the extensive list at the spa or explore the grounds. A short drive or a bracing trek away is the fortified town of Mystras, now a stunning UNESCO World Heritage Site. Explore its lost Byzantine churches, monasteries, palaces and ruins, soak up the atmosphere of the Cathedral of Agios Demetrios and the Monastery of Panagia Perivleptos, wander along quiet cobbled pathways or follow the meandering paths down the mountainside. You can also walk around Trypi village and swim in Knakion natural springs.

You'll eat in the smart, contemporary Gaia (meaning earth) restaurant, which has panoramic views of the valley. Authentic, mineral-packed local Peloponnese food is served and menus pivot on Greek and Mediterranean dishes, with simplicity, health and flavour at their heart. Breakfast is usually homemade granola with thyme honey and Greek yoghurt, or sweet potato and apple fritters, served with tahini and molasses. Lunches and dinners include fresh soups and salads, and light fish and meat dishes, all flavoured with fragrant herbs and antioxidant-packed spices to aid digestion and boost metabolism. Extra virgin olive oil is used. The bar offers fresh drinks, including smoothies, teas, coffees and spirits.

Euphoria Retreat sources most of its food from local farmers and producers and some veg and herbs are grown in the venue's own garden. Most of the staff at the venue are Greek. Toxin-free toiletries are provided. Most of the waste is recycled and the water is managed in line with the Forestry Authority.
The Extraordinary
The setting overlooking Sparta and the fertile valley of the Evrotas River; the gorgeous, thoughtfully designed spa - a 3,000 square metre haven.
The less than ordinary
Apart from the bedrooms, there aren't lots of places inside where you can curl up quietly with a book or your thoughts.
